Hyderabad: A massive fire broke out at a firecrackers shop, that was allegedly being run without permits, in Pragati Maha Vidyalaya, Hanuman Tekdi, around 9 pm on Sunday. The fire spread to an adjacent tiffin centre that was gutted.

On being informed of the fire, Abids police alerted fire services personnel . Four fire tenders were pressed into action which eventually managed to douse the fire.

Panic gripped residents, commuters and other shop owners. Over 23 firefighters evacuated the building and rescued 12 persons. Two women, who suffered burns on their hands, were rushed to a nearby private hospital where their condition is stated to be stable, police said.

Police and fire officials barricaded the fire-hit building after evacuation. Police registered a case of fire accident and are making efforts to arrest the cracker shop owner.

Incidentally, GHMC officials had visited the same shop on Sunday morning. “Our sanitary field assistant (SFA) asked the owner to apply for a trade licence. As he did not comply with the norms, we warned him that the establishment would be sealed,” said a GHMC official.

The norms are ensuring adequate fire safety equipment and taking temporary trade licences.

“His establishment does not comply with even one norm, which is the reason he did not apply for a temporary trade licence," said the official.
