One killed while flying kites atop building

Hyderabad: Life threatening glass-coated manja resulted in nearly 12 mishaps during Sakranti celebrations in the past three days. Eight cases, of which two involved minors, were reported in Osmania general hospital (OGH), while was registered with a private hospital.

“Apart from cases caused by manja, there were cases of people falling on or from roofs. Most of them were injuries on the limbs. There were no children below 10 years of age,” said Dr. Rakesh Sahay, medical superintendent, OGH.

In a tragic mishap in Motakondur, a 48-year-old man fell off a building while flying kites and died. The deceased J. Narender, got trapped by a string used for drying clothes and lost his balance. He hit a sharp stone and died while being rushed to a hospital.

Other cases of injuries were reported in Rachakonda and Nizambad where the victims were taken to private hospitals. In a case within Yadadri limits, a wife and husband suffered injuries after the husband, who was riding the two-wheeler got entangled with the glass thread manja. Locals raised concerns about use of manja threads in the temple vicinity.

Meanwhile, Dokapally Samvardhan, a 29-year-old techie suffered cuts from Chinese manja near Uppal metro station and was found unconscious by the locals. A 30-year-old man fell off the bike after his neck was entangled with the glass-coated manja in Nizamabad.

The mishaps were less compared to 2024. Hyderabad task force DCP Y.V.S. Sudheendra said that 107 cases were booked against 1224 persons involved in selling deadly manja threads. Around 7334 manja bobbins worth Rs.90 lakh were seized from their possession. Rachakonda sleuths booked 36 cases leading to a seizure of 56,000 metres of manja.
