Karimnagar: One student died and two others were hospitalised reportedly after they were bitten by a snake at the Peddapur Gurukul Residential School and Junior College in Metpally mandal of Jagtial district.

This is the second death of a student in the school in a fortnight. Earlier, three students had suffered from snakebite, out of whom one had died while two others recovered after treatment.

District collector B. Satya Prasad had suspended principal K. Vidyasagar on charge of negligence.

According to district superintendent of police, Uma Maheshwar Rao, all three students study in Class VI. Anirudh fell ill at around 3 am. The caretaker shifted the boy to the Jagtial government hospital where doctors said he was brought dead.

At around 7 am, two students, Mokshit and Hemanth Yadav, complained of severe stomach ache. The school staff shifted Mokshit to the Nizamabad government hospital and Hemanth Yadav to the Metpally government hospital.

The police rushed to the school and conducted an inquiry. A case was registered and investigation started.

BRS Korutla MLA Dr K. Sanjay, who visited the hospital at Metpally, said the boys might have suffered from a snakebite as there were no symptoms of food poisoning. The students were given anti-venom injection and kept under supervision.

Dr Sanjay said even after repeated snakebite incidents, no steps were taken for the safety of students.

The parents of the victims as well as the boy who died, had also sought compensation from the government for faster and better medical attention and that they release an immediate action plan on how they would prevent such incidents in the future.
