Hyderabad: Avula Odelu, a Peddapalli-district native who went to Dubai for employment, was found dead under mysterious circumstances after having gone missing for more than 20 days. His family alleged that Odelu was beaten by his employer and died in a hospital.

Odelu, from Sayampet village, went to Dubai eight months ago through an agent in Jagtial district under the promise of better employment. But when he reached there, he learned that he was sent on a tourist visa.

His family said he was working with Madinat Jalfar Tech Company. On July 27, he called his wife Varshini and informed her that his employer had not paid him wages for seven months and beat him and abused him when asked for money.

He requested his wife to send money so that he could return. The next day his phone was switched off. When his family asked his friends, they said Odelu was beaten up by his employers and taken to a hospital.

On August 7, his wife submitted a letter to the government’s NRI secretary asking after Odelu’s whereabouts and to bring him back home. Later, the family got information from a Julapally resident that Odelu had succumbed to the injuries in the hospital and his body was in the mortuary.

"His friends said he was thrown in an open ground nearby and was taken to the hospital sometime later," said Raji Reddy, a villager who is helping Odelu’s family. The family is requesting officials to look into the incident and repatriate Odelu’s body to India.
