Hyderabad: A disturbing surge in abortion-related malpractice by unqualified rural medical practitioners (RMPs) has put the lives of pregnant women at serious risk. Despite being unlicensed and untrained, some RMPs and unregistered practitioners dispense abortion pills, leading to life-threatening complications for their patients.

In Mulugu district, a pregnant woman is battles for her life at MGM Hospital after an RMP administered abortion medication, according to the Telangana Medical Council (TGMC), which is investigating such instances along with the relevant authorities.

The woman had sought help for a routine issue and reportedly received the pills from RMP Ramu of Mangapet. After taking the pills, she suffered severe bleeding and abdominal pain. She was taken to Hanamkonda’s Government Maternity Hospital (HGMH), where doctors found critical uterine damage and multi-organ dysfunction due to a medical condition called disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). Following urgent surgical intervention, she is now under intensive care at MGM Hospital, where her condition was stated to be precarious.

In another case, an unqualified practitioner, identified as Ramanachari from Keshavapur, allegedly provided abortion tablets to a woman from Siddipet district. The patient, experiencing excessive bleeding, was rushed to the HGMH, where swift medical response, including blood transfusion, saved her life. The TGMC said it was moving to register a case against him.

A medical store owner in Venkatapur, Mulugu district, also reportedly dispensed abortion pills to a pregnant woman, resulting in a near-fatal outcome. After losing consciousness, she was hospitalised at the HGMH. The woman was unable to identify the store owner, prompting TGMC officials to launch an inspection of all drug stores in the area.

The TGMC said that alongside the district health officer of Mulugu it was actively investigating the incidents. It urged local authorities to take decisive action to halt such dangerous practices.

Dr Naresh Kumar, TGMC member, expressed grave concern over the rising trend of unlicensed RMPs providing abortion pills, often without regard for medical protocols or patients’ safety. Indian Medical Association-Warangal president Dr Anwar Mia stressed that such practices were not only illegal but also hazardous, putting pregnant women in severe danger. He warned that RMPs involved in promoting unauthorised abortions would face strict legal consequences.
