Karimnagar: Spot driving licences were handed out to rural youths at a ‘Licence Mela’ organized by SP Akhil Mahajan and other police officials of Rajanna Sircilla district on Saturday.

Government chief whip and Vemulawada MLA Aadi Srinivas, district collector and officials of the transport department distributed licences to 72 youths, all above 18 who passed the driving test here.

Speaking on the occasion, Aadi Srinivas lauded the initiative taken up by the Rajanna Sircilla police for their social awareness programme and helping the rural youth.

All youths who know how to drive and have crossed 18 years of age must take a driving licence. The first thing officials ask a person who faced an accident is whether they possess a driving licence which will help them claim insurance, he suggested.

District collector Diwakar appreciated the police’s initiative for taking measures to prevent road accidents and traffic problems. Along with handing out licences, the police also created awareness about the importance of driving properly on roads.

Mahajan said after noticing that several youths drive vehicles but d not possess licences, an awareness programme was created among rural youths under Rudrangi and Veernapalli police station limits about the importance of possessing driving licences.

‘Licence Melas’ will be organised in a phased manner under several police station limits along with building awareness measures on traffic rules, and wearing helmets and seat belts, he added.
