Speed up Munneru Repairs: Uttam and Ponguleti
Hyderabad: The state government has stated that the repair works on the breached retaining wall of Munneru Vagu would be completed on a war footing. The decision to speed up the work was taken at a meeting chaired by irrigation minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy and revenue minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy at the Secretariat to review the progress of the repairs on Tuesday.
Srinivas Reddy said a 23-km-long wall was being constructed to prevent a recurrence of floods, like those caused by the breach of the retaining wall during this year’s monsoon season, resulting in flooding in Palair and Khammam towns.
The minister added that cement concrete walls are being built along the Munneru Vagu to mitigate future floods in Khammam.
The ministers have asked the officials to consider the historic flood flow records of the Munneru Vagu to ensure that the repairs and the new retaining wall are robust enough to withstand future floods and prevent inundation of towns along the river.
