Suryapet: A crop protection device, invented by community innovator Gorre Ashok, to protect crops from birds and animals at the critical stages is among the 13 innovations picked up by the Atal Innovation Mission of Niti Aayog for assistance for production of the prototype.

Ashok tested his prototype on the farm owned by his family and got good results. Unlike traditional devices to which animals and birds quickly adapt, this solution offers multiple sound options and used a 1.5 mm metal wire which it plucks. It is easy to use, afford and maintain.

The device comprises components that create different types of sound, and is powered by solar panels. It helps in shooing off birds and animals including wild boars and monkeys.

Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, Ashok said the repellent sounds suggested by the research wing of Prof. Jayashankar Telangana Agriculture University to scare away birds and animals, were taken into consideration while preparing the device.

At fixed intervals, the device makes sounds with vibration of metal wire at different points. Louder sounds would be created by the device to scare wild boars and monkeys. No other device available in the market would create multiple sounds like this innovation.

The two crucial stages where this device helps is at the time of sowing, when birds consume the seeds, and at harvest when the crops attract birds and animals.

Ashok, a native of Anjalipuram of Huzurnagar mandal in Suryapet district, hails from a small farmer family. He became a community innovator by inventing devices to ease works related to cultivation.

His other innovation a seed sowing tool has received widespread appreciation as it eliminates the need for women agriculture workers to bend repeatedly for every seed.

He would soon release crop protection devices into the market. The cost of the device would be between Rs 2,800 and Rs 3,000. One device would be enough for five acres, he added.
