Hyderabad:Telangana medical aspirants will benefit from 400 new seats in MBBS courses in eight state-run medical colleges from 2024-25. The National Medical Council (NMC) on Tuesday allotted 50 seats each in the medical colleges located in Yadadri, Medak, Maheshwaram, and Quthbullapur to . Each college has been allotted 50 seats.

The NMC had earlier approved 50 seats each in the new government medical colleges at Narayanpet, Jogulamba Gadwal, Narsampet and Mulugu earlier this year.

The Telangana government sought approval to establish eight new medical colleges last year. In a notification released by the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) of the NMC recently, the approval was given to four government colleges to start courses this year. With this, the total seats in 34 government medical colleges in Telangana will increase to 4,090. There are around the same number of seats in private medical colleges.

The approval came after a series of challenges. In June, National Medical Commission (NMC) officials had expressed concerns over inadequate infrastructure and staff during their inspection of the proposed medical colleges. The concerns were addressed as funds were allocated and with general transfers, staff appointed for teaching and other services. Following this, a second appeal was made, resulting in the approval of the remaining four colleges.
