Hyderabad: Governor Jishnu Dev Varma adopted Indiranagar Colony in Khairatabad as part of his initiative to promote cleanliness and make it a model neighbourhood. During his visit to the area on Friday, he told residents that maintaining cleanliness was a collective responsibility and could be achieved only through active public participation.

The Governor reviewed sanitation facilities available and encouraged residents to keep their surroundings clean. “Our homes, neighbourhoods, villages, state and the nation must be kept clean and secure. Rights come with responsibilities, and everyone should contribute to a clean and secure society,” Varma stated.

Governor Varma also highlighted the need to eliminate plastic use. He mentioned that government support would be forthcoming if individuals took responsibility for keeping their environment clean.

Principal secretary Burra Venkatesham said that the Governor aimed to develop Indiranagar into a model colony. Volunteers from the Governor's office and the National Service Scheme (NSS) will visit each household to identify issues and understand how to best facilitate development.

Earlier, the Governor administered a cleanliness pledge to all attendees, while volunteers performed a flash mob. GHMC commissioner Amrapali Kata noted that the 'Swachh Hi Seva' programme is educating students and the public about cleanliness. She mentioned that as the initiative progresses towards Gandhi Jayanti (October 2), various awareness programmes are being conducted at the circle level. Kata also highlighted efforts to support sanitation workers, including organising medical camps to address their welfare needs.
