Hyderabad: IT minister D. Sridhar Babu on Sunday demanded that the Centre declare the massive landslide in Wayanad, which has claimed over 350 lives, a national calamity and extend support to the state. The south had never witnessed such a massive natural calamity; if the Centre considers it a state issue, the nation will never forgive it, he said.

In a statement, Sridhar Babu asked the Narendra Modi government not to look at the Wayanad disaster from a political angle and treat it on a humanitarian basis. He suggested that the Centre prepare a manual to take up speedy relief and rehabilitation measures in case of natural disasters. Using remote sensing, the government should map vulnerable areas, he said.

Sridhar Babu pointed out that the routine weather alerts failed to correctly predict the possibility of such disasters occurring. Like seismic zones in the case of earthquakes, the Centre must categorise the areas which are prone to landslides and their intensity.
