Telangana: Surge in Pet Illnesses After Recent Rains
Hyderabad: The government superspeciality veterinary hospital at Narayanguda is witnessing a heavy rush of residents bringing their pets, their own and community pets like stray dogs, with complaints of varying types of illnesses.
After the heavy rain of earlier this week, around 200 to 250 cases are being referred each day in the hospital as against the 120 to 150 on normal days. The hospital reported 216 cases on Tuesday and 220 cases on Wednesday.
Specialists are attributing this to weather conditions like continuous drizzle and rise in humidity. These were leading to respiratory problems and gastrointestinal problems. Neglecting the injuries on the body will attract flies and lead to Maggot wounds, the expert said.
Dr Madhusudan, deputy director, animal husbandry, said, “as far as possible, young ones should not be exposed to the outside environment, especially not before administering all vaccinations. Moreover, there is a possibility of a surge in vector-borne diseases.”
He added, " Pets should not be exposed to inclement weather. Easily digestible fresh food should be given and professional help should be sought as soon as one notices changes in the behaviour of pets.”
