Hyderabad: Tension prevailed in Chaitanyapuri and Kothapet along the Musi riverside, as residents obstructed the officials of the Musi Riverfront Development Corporation Limited (MRDCL), municipal and revenue departments and the HMWS&SB from conducting surveys.

The officials arrived at Maruthinagar, Satyanagar Colony and Janapriya Colony to assess the encroachments for the Musi riverfront development project. However, the hundreds of residents gathered at the spot, blocked their entry and shouted abuses at the officers.

For more than four hours, officials requested the people to let them do their jobs and left the area without conducting the surveys as people refused to budge.

Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, Charan, a resident of Satyanagar Colony, said, “Instead of demolishing the encroachments on lakes, they are coming to demolish the houses of poor people like us living along the Musi. We have been living here for many years, what will happen to us if our houses are demolished?”

Krishna Kumari, a woman who lives in the same area, demanded that the government stop the project. “We have been living peacefully here, do not make us homeless,” she requested.
