Tribal girl critical in NIMS after food poisoning.

Hyderabad: Health minister Damodar Rajanarsimha on Monday visited the three teenage girls from the tribal welfare school, Wankidi mandal, Komaram Beem district, undergoing treatment at NIMS in Hyderabad after suffering from food poisoning. The minister spoke to the girls and inquired about their health condition from the medical staff. While two girls Mahalakshmi and Jyothi have recovered, Shailaja continues to be on ventilator support as her condition is critical. These three girls were brought to NIMS after about 36 students from the school were reported to have food poisoning.

C. Shailaja, a 16-year-old student is in critical condition. She was admitted to the hospital on November 5 after suffering from repeated episodes of vomiting and loose stools. Upon admission, Shailaja was diagnosed with kidney issues, specifically elevated serum creatinine levels, dehydration and a lung infection. She was immediately placed on a ventilator to support her breathing. For the next three days, she underwent Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT) to address her kidney dysfunction.

By November 8, she showed signs of improvement, with her lung infection subsiding and her urine output returning to normal. The young patient was able to speak and was put on an oral soft diet, showing promising recovery. However, in a sudden turn of events, she suffered a respiratory arrest early morning on Monday. She was placed back on the ventilator and her dialysis treatment continues as her condition remains critical.

E. Mahalakshmi, 14, also experienced multiple episodes of vomiting and loose motions that led to dehydration and kidney issues. She was admitted to NIMS’ ICU with low blood pressure, dyselectrolytemia, low hemoglobin and low platelet count. The doctors treated her with antibiotics and intravenous (IV) fluids. She has now completely recovered and is fit for discharge. Similar conditions were seen in 13-year-old K. Jyothi. She was treated with antibiotics and IV fluids and was given four dialysis sessions last week. While the doctors said she has recovered and is stable, they have kept her in a private room under observation.
