Hyderabad: Union minister Anurag Thakur praised former prime minister Atal Behari Vajpayee for his remarkable leadership, noting that the former prime minister earned the respect of both allies and opposition leaders alike due to his strong character and political acumen. Thakur also lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi for fulfilling a long-standing goal of the party’s founders by abrogating Article 370.

Speaking to the media at the party headquarters in Hyderabad, Thakur said, “Vajpayee left a lasting impact in every role he played—whether as a politician, Prime Minister or as a responsible leader of India. The respect he commanded from former PM P.V. Narasimha Rao was unparalleled. Our party held him in the highest regard. During the Kargil War, Vajpayee’s declaration that India would not cede an inch of land to Pakistan bolstered the morale of our troops, despite pressure from the US to halt the conflict.”

Thakur further emphasised Vajpayee’s role in reshaping India’s global image, particularly through the successful nuclear tests that stunned the world. “Under Vajpayee’s leadership, India went from being derided internationally to receiving praise. The same media that once mocked us as a nation of beggars and snake charmers during our 50th Independence Day in 1997 now acknowledged our strength,” he added.
