Hyderabad: “Every sheet of paper comes at a cost to the planet,” reminded B. Nageswara Rao, project officer of Telangana Pollution Control Board (TGPCB), pointing out that global deforestation is driven 35 per cent by paper production. Speaking at the World Paper Free Day event organised by TGPCB at Hindu College for Women, Sanathnagar, on Wednesday, he highlighted the need for bringing down paper waste to build a greener society.

The awareness programme, which engaged over 70 students, featured an interactive quiz highlighting the environmental toll of paper dependence, encouraging the students to adopt paperless practices. “Digitising records, using e-signatures and fostering electronic communication can not only cut costs but significantly reduce our ecological footprint,” Rao explained.

Principal Dr Reema Sarkari Srivastava urged students to mind their paper consumption and stressed the role of proper recycling. “Reducing our carbon footprint is urgent and every student can contribute by being mindful of paper usage,” she said. Principal of Hindu College for Women (Junior) Y.L.V.N. Sarma, faculty and students participated in the event and made a collective pledge for an eco-friendly future.
