Braided Elegance
Braids are trending, thanks to the recently concluded Paris Olympics. Tress couture was big as athletes experimented with vibrant colours and trendy braids embellished with bows and beads
The Olympics is an inspiring sporting event that motivates people across the globe to pursue sports, be fitter and work hard with commitment. Besides that, this year make-up, nail art and the fascination with all things plaited have set up new fads in fashion. Athletes’ hairstyles did add to the glamour, especially the braids — box braids, high-ponytail braids, knotted braids, pigtail braids, corn rows, etc, the humble braid was styled in a mind-bonging way.
Braids are shaped by combining sections of hair and crossing them over each other to create a pattern. Braids trace their origin in Africa almost 5000 years ago. Braid style identified the tribe they belonged to, their marital status, age, wealth, and power.
In India too, for centuries, women have been plaiting their hair. From toddlers to Bollywood actresses are all seen sporting braids for various occasions. Recently at the Ambani wedding and pre-wedding functions, one saw various types of braids. Radhika Merchant, the bride wore during one of the ceremonies long braid covered with gold accessories. Isha Ambani too wore a hip-length braided hairdo adorned along with a Gajra and precious stones. Khloe Kardashian, the celebrity guest at the wedding flaunted a low French braid, with diamond brooches. Kim Kardashian wore a long tight braid with Indian attire.
Confident, stylish sports personalities
The way your hair is done can either help or hinder your performance. Table tennis player Reeth Rishya Tennison (In 2021, was the first Indian woman to win a Pro Tour singles title when she claimed the Ecuador Open) says, “Many players keep their hair game on point, and it shows that they are best on the field. Styling shows confidence. Many contestants, also style their hair with ribbons of a similar colour as their country’s flag which shows National pride. Maintaining focus and adhering to the rules of dressing up during a tournament is crucial for success. An athlete also has to ensure that hair doesn’t distract while playing; staying comfortable and focused can make a big difference in your performance”.
Braids in spotlight
Sports persons have emerged as influential fashion icons in recent years, shaping trends and partnering with brands. Hairstyles made news in the Paris Olympics for sure.
