Battlefield 1 is probably the most talked about game right now and for good reason. The multiplayer beta has seen a phenomenal response online and has been well received for the most part. The World War 1 setting in the Sinai Desert provides a massive open map, moving away from the close quarter gameplay that has crept into the game recently. The ‘time to kill’ has increased meaning you no longer get insta-killed in a bullet or two, slowing things down a notch.

However, not all the World War 1 changes are impressive. As of now, vehicles are overpowered solely because only the assault class is equipped to take them out, meaning a well-coordinated mech assault will all but destroy opponents. The Medic class seems underused as most players opt for a faster respawn. In terms of snipers, they seem one of the most preferred classes in Battlefield 1 and without variable zooms from the modern era, it really comes down to skill and I haven’t had this much fun sniping in a long time.

The map itself plays a big part in how Battlefield 1 has changed things up with the destruction mechanics, reminiscent of Bad Company games. The dynamic sandstorm that comes and goes randomly, completely removing long range gameplay out of the equation and even making short range combat much harder to handle forcing players to play smarter with the new gas mask mechanic also comes into play.

New additions such as the horses, biplanes and of course the behemoth vehicles for the losing teams are tons of fun and feel right in place. Overall Battlefield 1 is definitely a step in the right direction and the beta is quite reassuring.
