Almost every day, we see a Google Doodle play prank on its home page celebrating and remembering special occasions and people. This time around, it was the turn of Facebook as Star Trek turned a year older. All its ‘reactions’ got a stunning makeover akin to the popular science fiction series. Counting from the time ‘The Original Series’ hit the screens, Star Trek is in its golden jubilee year. Apart from the classic thumbs up, the parent ‘like’ button, all others had the makeover — the Vulcan salute, Kirk (haha), Spock (wow), Geordi (sad), and Klingon (angry).

Earlier, on Mother’s Day, Facebook offered a surprise flower in the reactions line-up. The temporary reaction though was available only for the day. The Star Trek fans in the US and Canada were the fortunate few to enjoy the Star Trek reactions. Facebook’s surprise gifts were not just the reactions. It came up with a personalised greeting letting users add a ‘custom Star Trek’ frame to their profile picture. “We wanted to mark this fun, nostalgic moment and help the passionate community of Star Trek fans celebrate in some unique ways on Facebook,” wrote Lindsey Shepard, marketing lead, Facebook Messenger.
