Google launches developer preview of its new IoT platform
The company's IoT platform is aimed for building smart devices on top of Android APIs and Google's own services.
Google on 13 December announced the launch of the developer preview of its new IoT platform, Android Things. The platform is aimed towards building smart devices on top of Android APIs and Google’s own services.
The platform is a re-branded version of its Project Brillo which combines numerous Android developer tools like Android Studio, Android SDK, Google Play services and its cloud computing services. “The company sees Android Things as an evolution of Brillo that builds on what Google learned from this earlier project. Google will work with all early access Brillo users to migrate their projects to Android Things,” reported TechCrunch. The company in a similar effort has extended support for Intel Edison, NXP Pico and the Raspberry Pi 3.
The company further stated that smart device manufacturers such Belkin, WeMo, LiFX, Honeywell, Wink, TP-Link and First Alert through the use of Weave, will be allowing their devices to connect with Google Assistant. The Weave platform is also receiving an update that will make it easier to connect or gain access to Google Assistant.
A new introduction – Device SDK that comes with a built-in support for light bulbs, smart plugs, switches, thermostats and support for other devices was also unveiled. Android Things will soon be given a public source code release.
