An Indie gem from India
Raji: An Ancient Epic is an action game that follows the lead character Raji in her quest to stop a demonic invasion and rescue her brother.
Most games coming out of India end up being cheap mobile clones, but every now and then you still come across passionate developers looking to make something beautiful and not just a quick buck. One such project stood out at this years Nasscom Game Developer Conference; Raji: An ancient Epic by a small team of eight devs at Nodding Head Games.
Raji: An Ancient Epic is an action game that follows the lead character Raji in her quest to stop a demonic invasion and rescue her brother. The game is set in ancient India with everything from the music to the art style fitting perfectly into the setting and considering the demo was made by just eight people over 10 months, it is mind-blowingly good.
The gameplay isn’t anything spectacular, but also gives a God of War-esque feel with camera angles changing with areas and the dodge and attack combat. However it’s not as simple as it sounds because it comes with a full skill tree, multi hit combos etc; so there’s definitely more than meets the eye. There’s even an execution prompt to change things up a little. Overall as far as combat is concerned, Raji is definitely ahead of a lot of indies, not just from India in terms of both gameplay and presentation. The hand drawn art style combined with the amazing music and backed by solid gameplay make Raji: An Ancient Epic definitely one to keep an eye out for.
The game is currently seeking funding via Kickstarter with $34K already raised by 870 backers, but there’s a long way to go before they’re funded. The game is set to launch in 2019 for PC and consoles. Who knows, this might just be the next big thing from India since lovely planet.
