Dyson to move onto electric cars from vacuum cleaners after 2020
Dyson founder says they are already working on the electric car with 400 dedicated employees.
Electric cars are slowly becoming the trend in the tech industry, where every major name is looking to get an early access to the future of automotive technology. The latest name confirmed to join the electric car bandwagon is Dyson, a company known for making vacuum cleaners.
In an interview to BBC, James Dyson, the founder of the company, has stated that they are working on an electric car bound to roll out of the factory by 2020. The company already has a team of 400 people in place working on the electric car. However, they are still far from the prototype stage. The company also hasn’t decided the location of the factory or the economies of building their dream electric car.
Dyson says that he has a rough idea about the expenses of developing the car — 1 billion Euro on developing the car and another billion Euro on developing the battery. He also says that their electric car would be radical and different as he states, “what’s the point in making it like any other electric car?”
Dyson's electric car will not be aimed at mass market, which means they will be directly competing with the likes of Tesla and their class-leading offerings in the segment. However, Tesla made the electric car look like a conventional car with conventional features and tech companies’ vision of electric cars are generally odd-looking eco-boxes with no focus on practicality. Let’s hope that Dyson will follow Tesla’s footsteps and make their ‘radical’ cars appeal to general petrolhead.
