The Redmi 5A will be available in Dark Grey, Gold and Rose Gold.

In a bid to revamp the budget end of its smartphone lineup, Xiaomi has announced an updated version of its Redmi 4A budget smartphone — the Redmi 5A. The smartphone starts at Rs 5,999 for the base 2GB/16GB variant and Rs 6,999 for 3GB/32GB variant. However, Xiaomi is offering an additional discount of Rs 1,000 for the first five million customers of the 2GB/16GB variant, bringing its price down to Rs 4,999. It will be available exclusively on Flipkart.

As mentioned previously, the Redmi 5A is an update to the Redmi 4A launched earlier this year. The Redmi 5A retains the 5-inch HD LCD display as well as the internals — it is powered by the same 1.4Ghz quad core Snapdragon 425 chipset along with 2GB/3GB of RAM and 16GB/32GB internal storage. Users can also expand the storage up to 128GB.  However, what’s new here is the operating system — it runs on Android 7.1.1 Nougat-based MIUI 9, which is the latest version of Xiaomi’s proprietary operating system. It is also one of the few smartphones to offer dedicated slots for two SIM cards and a microSD card.

When it comes to the cameras, the Redmi 5A utilises a 13MP sensor with f/2.2 aperture and PDAF for the rear as well as a 5MP selfie sensor for the front. The smartphone is powered by a 3000mAh battery which the company claims will last for eight days in standby. The Redmi 5A also comes with IR blaster and secondary noise cancelling microphones. The Redmi 5A will be available in Dark Grey, Gold and Rose Gold.
