Moto to bring Play variant back to the Moto G family next year
The Moto G6 family will get a Play edition similar to last year's Moto G4 Play.
The Moto G series smartphones need no introduction. It’s one of the most recognisable names in the affordable mid-range categories and has been single-handedly responsible for bringing decent performance to budgets smartphones. Lately, the Moto G lineup has expanded after Lenovo’s takeover and current lineup includes four different models, which can be a bit confusing. Motorola is probably looking to trim down the lineup next year and bringing back the ‘Play’ moniker.
Popular tipster Evan Blass has hinted that Motorola will be bringing three variants of the sixth generation Moto G. They could be named the following: Moto G6, Moto G6 Plus and the Moto G6 Play. Yes, Motorola could bring back the ‘Play’ moniker for Moto G family. The G6 Plus will be the most expensive and well-equipped variant whereas the G6 will be a standard variant with moderate features on board. The G6 Play will be the most affordable version and will feature only the essentials on a moderately powerful chipset.
While the leak doesn’t give out anything else, it is good to see a more simple lineup instead of a number of similarly-named variants as with the current Moto G5 series. The Moto G5 series and the Moto G5S models are running Android Nougat and will be upgraded to Android Oreo sometime in the future. Therefore, it can be expected that the G6 models will come preloaded with Android Oreo at least and should get the Android P update in their lifecycle.
