Xiaomi is reportedly preparing self-designed mobile processor for its upcoming smartphones in order to minimize its reliance on Qualcomm and MediaTek.

According to a report by Bloomberg, the mass production of the self-designed mobile processor is expected to begin in 2025.
This move comes after Chinese officials have asked local firms to minimize the reliance on foreign companies, reported Bloomberg.
In addition to the investment in semiconductors, Beijing-based Xiaomi has already heavily invested on electric vehicles this year but the smartphone chipset area is not an easy task as many tech giants have failed to compete which includes Intel, Nvidia and Oppo.
Only Apple and Google have their devices with their self-designed mobile processor. Even Samsung relies heavily on the Qualcomm chipsets.
The in-house chipmaking expertise will help Xiaomi in making better EVs. The company moved into making self-designed chipset because of sanctions by the first Trump administration, which was later revoked, Bloomberg stated.
In October, Xiaomi Chief Executive Officer Lei Jun said that the company will invest 30 billion yuan ($4.1 billion) in research and development in 2025. The research will focus on artificial intelligence, chips and operating system improvements.
