Obesity among fathers is on the rise

this Father's Day it is time to shine the spotlight on how fathers can be fit and fine

If you look at how your father looked when he got married and how he looks now, chances are that you will see visible changes especially around his weight. Men tend to put on weight and this is something that goes unnoticed. So, this Father’s Day give him a gift of health. Wondering how? Experts weigh in.

Be Well

Maintaining a healthy weight is imperative for general well-being, and fathers are no exception. As men age, changes in metabolism and lifestyle can lead to weight

gain, which can adversely affect their health. Himalayan Siddhaa Akshar, Founder, Akshar Yoga Institutions says, “It is important to approach weight loss with an emphasis on overall health and well-being rather than quick fixes, as rapid weight loss can be unhealthy, unscientific, and have a variety of negative side effects. Instead, it is best to prioritise a nutritious diet for long-term and sustainable weight loss.”

According to 2020 research, there are more than 1 billion overweight people worldwide, with obesity being recognised as a global epidemic. “Surprisingly approximately one-third of the global population is overweight, with 10% of this population classified as obese. These statistics highlight the critical importance of individuals addressing their weight and adopting healthier lifestyle choices in order to combat the growing weight-related health issues,” says Akshar, an internationally acclaimed spiritual yogic master.

Listen to Nature

The Ayurvedic approach to weight loss has been practised for thousands of years and has proven to be effective due to its comprehensiveness. To maintain optimal body weight, Ayurveda recommends correcting the faulty metabolic factors. To achieve optimal health, fathers should prioritise health above all else.

"For this, one should undoubtedly follow the Dinacharya principle, which is mentioned in Ayurvedic classics. Getting up early in the morning, doing abhyanga (oil application), exercise or yogasana (postural workout), ensuring adequate sleep at night, avoiding waking late at night and day sleep, cultivating proper food rituals, and cleansing on a regular basis. Cleansing removes toxins and aids in the treatment of many ailments, preventing recurrence,” says Dr Subhash S.M, Consulting Ayurveda Physician, CGH — SwaSwara, Gokarna.

Exercise Equation

Yoga is a safe and gentle activity that can help align your body and mind with your weight loss goals. Weight management for fathers requires a holistic approach that integrates various aspects of their lives. “Involving their children in these activities adds a fun and family-oriented dimension to fitness. Resistance training is another important component to build muscle mass, boosting metabolism, and aiding in weight management. Whether it is weightlifting, bodyweight exercises, or using resistance bands, fathers can choose exercises that suit their preferences and can be conveniently practised,” says Chitharesh Kongarampilly Natesan aka The Indian Monster, professional bodybuilder.

Food Fix

It is important that men refrain from food that contains trans and saturated fats, such as fast food, fried foods, and snacks. Instead, choose healthier options like whole grains and fresh fruits and vegetables. Limit sugar consumption to less than 5-10% of your calorie intake. “Regular ingestion of soda, fruit juices, energy drinks, and sweetened coffee or tea precipitates a surfeit of calorific intake bereft of essential nutrients. Opting for healthier alternatives, such as water, unsweetened tea, or low-sugar options, serves as a prudent choice,” concludes Natesan.
