Telangana HC Extends Stay on Teacher Transfers

HYDERABAD: The Telangana High Court on Monday, which was celebrated as Gurupurnima, asked the state government why it was going after teachers of state-run schools and transferring them en masse.

A division bench of the High Court of Chief Justice Ujjal Bhuyan and Justice N. Tukaramji was dealing with the batch of petitions challenging the Telangana Teachers Regulation of Transfers Rules made through GO 5 dated January 25, 2023.

Additional Advocate General  J. Ramachandra Rao said that a court stay on teacher transfers had stopped work in the education department. He said that the government had effected the transfers based on the request of the teachers made through their unions.

Sharply reacting, the bench asked him to argue the case on merits. Government counsel requested more time and the bench asked how could the education department be paralysed if the teachers were not transferred.

Chief Justice Bhuyan observed that the teachers work for years in a school and develop a bond with the students. How can the stay orders on transfers affect the administration, he asked. Observing that Monday was Gurupurnima, the Chief Justice  asked, “Why on this day is going after the teachers.” The bench adjourned the hearing to July 11.
