HYDERABAD: Teachers in government-run primary schools questioned the lack of ayahs (helpers) to take care of small children and undertake other chores, such as ensuring cleanliness.

Many, bemoaning the fact that there was no provision for the same, said that they pooled money in several instances to appoint such helpers.

There are 498 government primary schools in Hyderabad.

A primary teacher said that while it was praiseworthy that the government is ensuring bigger buildings and swanky equipment for schools, should also ensure basic manpower for proper school functioning.

A second teacher said: “Some volunteers, who are paid nothing, sometimes visit the school when they are in a helping mood only.”

A third teacher said: “Without aayahs, it will be difficult for teachers to take care of the class and the children. The authorities should use their wisdom and consider providing at least one aayah per primary school.”
