Kakar sisters make a mark in Bollywood
The siblings who were recently in Chennai speak about their musical journey.
The whole country has been grooving to one of the biggest party hits of the year — Kar Gayi Chull from Kapoor and Sons. Also, who can forget the moving rendition of Bheeg Loon from Khamoshiyan? The women behind these songs — Sukriti and Prakriti Kakar — are currently making their mark in the Bollywood music industry. The Kakar siblings are the only twin sisters to have the same profession in Bollywood.
The gorgeous women were in the city for a concert and they rocked the stage with peppy numbers. About their journey with music, Prakriti says, “My mom was a music teacher and she has been singing playback for many years. Amidst all of that, we realised music is the only thing that was natural and it had to be part of our profession one day. Very rarely passion becomes your profession. For us, it happened very organically. Our journey started when we were 15 years old and we got to sing backup vocals and jingles. We’ve still got a long way to go.”
Sukriti claims that she loves singing groovy dance songs and pop numbers. “Since I am strong at Western music, I keep getting party numbers. When it comes to playback singing, I would like to experiment with romantic songs,” she explains.
When asked about their connection with Chennai, Prakriti reveals that they have visited the city for a couple of concerts, but claims one as special. “In this concert, we picked our favourite cabaret numbers for the audience. I love the authenticity here! People are so warm and welcoming,” she adds.
The music industry is extremely competitive with a number of reality shows cropping up in each channel. Sukriti asserts, “Every singer needs to have a USP for them to stand out in the crowd. I think my USP is the low husky tone which is distinguishable from others. Personally, I am not a fan of reality shows. It is definitely a great opportunity to feature on television. Somehow, the concept of reality shows hasn’t struck a chord with me. One should always have their own spin to their rendition and not copy someone else. Know yourself a little better and it will help your singing.”
About their twin sister tagline, the duo adds, “We’ve kind of lived in an identity crisis since our childhood and even during concerts, people have a hard time figuring us out. No composer has worked with the two of us together yet. When it comes to music, our approach is quite different so music directors do find out the difference easily.”
Sukriti closely follows the works of AR Rahman and the duo is open to works in Tamil as well. Currently, they are working on an independent album — “We have been writing a few songs and we are just waiting for the right time to release it. The songs are all ready and we’re looking forward to its release,” Sukriti concludes.
