The summers mean not just heat but also humidity which can throw a spanner in the works as far as your makeup is concerned. So how do you ensure you beat the heat in style? We ask experts to weigh in.

Do it right

It is a must that you prepare your skin in summer to ensure that you have a base that is sweat-proof, fresh and clean. When it comes to heat-proof makeup, embrace the ‘less is more’ philosophy. Keep your skin fresh and radiant by allowing it to breathe with minimal makeup. Alisha Dantes, Marketing Manager, Plum Goodness explains, “opt for lightweight, water-based products like BB creams. Use oil-free formulas, set your makeup with a light dusting of setting powder, and embrace waterproof and long-lasting options for eyes and lips. Do not forget sunscreen under your base. It is best to rely on techniques like using a weightless primer, long-wearing and sweatproof formulas, and setting makeup.”

Avleen Bansal, Head of Trainings, Makeup Studio adds, “use a lightweight, oil-free moisturizer that suits your skin type to keep your skin hydrated without feeling heavy. Set your foundation and concealer with a light dusting of translucent powder. Focus on the T-zone or any areas prone to excess oil.”

Watch Out

Avoid silicone and oil-based formulations. Look out for ingredients such as mineral oil and petroleum and steer clear of the products that have these components. Dr. Monica Kapoor, Celebrity Cosmetologist and Director of Flawless Cosmetic Clinic & ILACAD Institute says, “avoid heavy, cakey foundations that suffocate your skin, and instead, opt for lightweight formulas that provide coverage without clogging pores. Watch out for ingredients like parabens, sulfates, and phthalates, which can irritate the skin. Look for makeup products that are non-comedogenic, oil-free, and contain SPF for added protection. Remember, the best makeup is one that makes you feel confident and comfortable in your own skin.”

Sun Proof

When it comes to makeup, the effectiveness and suitability of different products can vary based on individual preferences, skin types, and desired outcomes. Mamta Naik Associate Vice President, Product Development, SUGAR Cosmetics says, “always use sunscreen with a SPF 50 or higher before you apply your makeup. Opt for base products with a matte or a natural-looking finish that does not emphasize the skin’s oiliness. Keep a blotting paper handy to dab your face to absorb dirt, oil, and greasiness throughout the day.” Always apply your makeup in thin layers rather than heavy ones. Heavy layers can melt or crease more easily in heat. Build up coverage gradually to achieve the desired look.

Less is More

Applying a primer before your makeup helps create a smooth canvas for application and can help extend the wear of your makeup. Try to look for a primer with oil-control properties. Look for phrases like ‘long-wear’, ‘matte’, or ‘sweat-proof’ on the product labels. Mainly, understand what your skin wears the best and always choose that. A hydrating, water-based foundation can do wonders in summers.

Avni Sricharan, Co-founder, Defi Beauty, says, “in hot weather, heavy makeup can feel uncomfortable and may melt off easily. Instead, focus on compact powders with mattifying and blurring properties. This will help control shine and keep your makeup in place, letting your inner glow shine through. Choose a lightweight, translucent powder to set your makeup and control shine. Avoid heavy powders that can accentuate dryness or settle into fine lines. Opt for powder formulas for blush and bronzer. Cream formulas can be prone to melting in the heat.”

Tips

  • Keep your makeup brushes and tools clean to prevent the build-up of bacteria. Regularly wash your brushes and replace any expired or contaminated products.
  • At the end of the day, make sure to thoroughly remove your makeup to let your skin breathe and recover. Use a gentle cleanser to cleanse your face and follow up with a night skincare regime.
  • Carry a small makeup bag with essentials for touch-ups throughout the day, such as a mini powder, blotting papers, and a lip product. This helps maintain a put-together look.
  • Keep your lips hydrated with a moisturising lip balm that contains SPF. Avoid matte or long-wearing liquid lipsticks that can be drying and uncomfortable in hot weather.
