AP Govt form on widening HNSS main canal: Keshav

Anantapur: Finance minister Payyavula Keshav said the government was firm on completion of Handri-Neeva Sujala Shravanthi (HNSS) project main canal widening from Malyala to Jeedipalli reservoir in Anantapur district to draw 3,850 cusecs of water.
The minister, who held a review meeting with the HNSS engineers here on Friday, said no proper steps were initiated towards widening of the main canal under phase–I and expansion of works under phase–II over the past five years during the YSRC government.
“We are planning to complete the pending works under both phases to provide irrigation and drinking water through HNSS project to the Rayalaseema region”, the minister said.
As part of Phase-I of the project, expansion of main canal will be taken up along with renovation of Hothur and Chabala canals along with Renukmalapalle canal.
The minister said the existing HNSS main canal was unable to meet the needs of Rayalaseema region and stressed the need to expand the main canal to hold 3,850 cusecs capacity to from the zero milestone of the Srisailam backwaters till Malyala in Anantapur district.
Referring to Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu’s assurance to take up two reservoirs in Madakasira area through Madakasira branch canal and the pending Bhairavani Thippa (BT) project, upper Pennar project in the region, the minister said a detailed report will be submitted to the CM seeking clearance for the pending works.
Keshav said a proper plan will be executed to meet the needs of the drought-hit parts of the region following directions from the Chief Minister.
HNSS superintending engineer Dese Naik and several other officials were present.
