Visakhapatnam: Andhra Pradesh, renowned for its rich cultural heritage and artistic traditions, is home to several esteemed fine arts colleges. These include Acharya Nagarjuna Fine Arts College in Guntur, Yogi Vemana Fine Arts College in Kadapa, Dr. YSR Architecture and Fine Arts University in Kadapa, and Andhra University Fine Arts College in Visakhapatnam.

However, lack of a government art gallery is posing significant challenges for the fine arts graduates. Preethi Gajula Sangita, Urban Sketchers community builder in Visakhapatnam, says, “Lack of such infrastructure not only stifles growth of individual artists but also hampers the region's cultural development. Art galleries and exhibition spaces foster creativity, encourage dialogue, and build a community around arts. They provide a platform for artists to share their perspectives, evoke emotions and inspire others.”
Ajay goes on to quote Picasso, “Art is a lie that makes us realise the truth,” emphasising the need for art galleries in AP.
Art graduates have immense potential. We can contribute significantly to the art world, both nationally and internationally. However, to do so, we need visibility and support from the community. We need dedicated spaces where our work can be appreciated and celebrated." — P.V. Hanumant, an artist
Andhra University Fine Arts College in Visakhapatnam is one of the oldest and most prestigious institutions in the region. Around 40 talented artists graduate from this esteemed college each year, eager to contribute to the vibrant tapestry of Indian visual arts. Despite the rigorous training and exceptional talent developed within its walls, AU Fine Arts College graduates struggle to showcase their work due to the lack of adequate galleries and exhibition spaces throughout the state.” — B. Ramesh, a retired professor of painting at Andhra University Fine Arts College
There is a State Art Gallery in Telangana and a Jehangir Art Gallery in Mumbai. Many artists from AP seek to showcase their work at these venues. However, they often face challenges in securing space. For instance, bookings for Jehangir Art Gallery are already full for the next six years.” — S. Ajay, the coordinator of Progressive Artists League in Visakhapatnam.
