Visakhapatnam: Newly-appointed health commissioner V. Karuna on Tuesday conducted her first official inspection of government hospitals in Parvathipuram Manyam on Tuesday, during which it was found that the district hospital has a shortage of about 150 beds.

Karuna emphasised the importance of institutional deliveries at government hospitals and announced plans to impart training in a midwifery course for two staff nurses working in primary health centres.

She said that 13 teams were deputed to the district to examine the facilities available in the hospitals in the district and accordingly action will be taken.

The Parvathipuram Manyam district hospital is being upgraded to 150 beds. The hospital, which serves as the main health institution in the region, handles a patient load of 250 to 300 inpatients and 500 to 600 outpatients daily.

Dr. B. Vagdevi, hospital superintendent, while having a conversation with Deccan Chronicle, said while the hospital provides comprehensive services including blood tests, dialysis, and CT scans, only 100 beds are currently operational.

"The remaining 50 beds are still under construction, causing significant challenges in patient care," she explained. The shortage was because of a lack of funds.

The hospital, which performs approximately 300 surgeries every month, operates the only blood bank in the area and maintains round-the-clock services with a staff of 32 nurses and 30 doctors.

Recently, NABARD (National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development) has pledged `49 crore for constructing a super-specialty hospital in Parvathipuram. This investment is part of a larger Rs 692 crore initiative aimed at strengthening medical infrastructure across Vizianagaram and Parvathipuram Manyam districts.
