Visakhapatnam: Following the forced suicide of a woman Padmini from Gajuwaka, police have arrested her husband Someshwar, his mother, father, sister and brother-in-law for torture and dowry harassment.

According to police, Padmini of Gajuwaka had been undergoing prolonged harassment at the place of her in-laws, who had been harassing her for bringing additional dowry.
The harassment continued even after Padmini had given birth to two children. On May 7, her husband and in-laws again harassed her for dowry. Her husband went on to force her to drink poison, which Padmini did.
Following this, she was admitted to the King George Hospital (KGH) on May 7 in a critical condition. Before succumbing to her injuries on May 26, Padmini gave a statement accusing her husband Someshwar, his mother, father, sister, and brother-in-law of torture.
According to the Gajuwaka circle inspector, all the five accused have been arrested based on Padmini’s statement. Investigation is ongoing and the specific nature of torture and cause of death will be determined after the autopsy report comes out.
The victim’s family members started protests following Padmini’s death, demanding the arrest of all five members involved in her harassment. They called off their protest after knowing that all the accused had been arrested.
