Vijayawada: Water resources department officials have started repairing gates 67, 69 and 70 of the Prakasam Barrage built across River Krishna in Vijayawada. The counterweight of gate 69 broke when a boat drifting upstream of the barrage hit it last Monday. After a thorough inspection, authorities found that counterweights of gates 67 and 70 had also been damaged. Following irrigation adviser K. Kannayya Naidu's suggestions, authorities replaced these counterweights with new ones on Sunday.

The repair works are being carried out by Beckham Infra, Hyderabad. The metal and concrete filling works at the site are progressing rapidly. Kannayya Naidu expressed happiness that counterweight fixing work had been completed before the Prakasam Barrage received flood of more than 4.50 lakh cusecs.
The irrigation adviser said the concrete and metal filling works for the three counterweights will be completed within two to three days. After that, irrigation officials will be able to operate gates 67, 69, and 70.
Krishna Central (KC) division executive engineer P.V.R. Krishna Rao said the sand boats stuck at the gates will be removed once the counterweight work at the three gates is completed.
