Vizag welcomes 2025 with festive spirit amid tight security

Visakhapatnam: The city ushered in the New Year with a blend of traditional fervour and heightened security as thousands gathered to celebrate New Year's Day. However, the festivities were marred by two tragic deaths.
A 40-year-old contract worker from Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, Sudhala Siva, died while bursting firecrackers in Vadlapudi locality. In another unfortunate incident, S. Kanoj, a young man from Raipur, drowned at Visakha Beach on Wednesday. Kanoj had ventured into the sea with three friends near Ramanaidu Studio.
Temples across the city saw large crowds of devotees seeking blessings, with many performing special vehicle pujas and prayers for health and prosperity.
Local markets were bustling with festive activity as vendors reported brisk sales of flowers, fruits, and gift hampers, with prices starting at Rs 200. Bakeries also saw high demand for cakes as residents rushed to purchase gifts for their loved ones.

Traffic ADCP Praveen Kumar Reddy told Deccan Chronicle that law enforcement officials registered 218 cases of drunk driving and seized 19 vehicles on December 31 alone. A force of 1,500 police personnel was deployed to maintain law and order during the festivities.
