Flights disrupted as bad weather hits Chennai and Tirupati
Severe weather conditions in Chennai and Tirupati have caused significant disruptions in flight operations, with numerous cancellations and diversions reported on Friday. Passengers are advised to stay updated on flight schedules and plan accordingly.
A total of 20 flights were canceled due to the inclement weather:
- HYD-MAA (Hyderabad to Chennai): 3 cancellations
- HYD-TIR (Hyderabad to Tirupati): 7 cancellations
- MAA-HYD (Chennai to Hyderabad): 3 cancellations
- TIR-HYD (Tirupati to Hyderabad): 7 cancellations
In addition to cancellations, two major flights were diverted:
- Flight 6E 683 (BOM-MAA): Carrying 200 passengers, the Mumbai to Chennai flight was diverted due to poor visibility and hazardous weather conditions at Chennai Airport.
- Flight AI 429 (DEL-MAA): With 147 passengers onboard, this Delhi to Chennai flight was rerouted as Chennai Airport temporarily ceased operations owing to adverse weather.
Officials at Chennai Airport cited safety concerns as the primary reason for these disruptions. The airport remains on high alert, monitoring weather updates closely to determine the resumption of normal operations.
Passengers affected by cancellations and diversions have been offered assistance, including alternative arrangements and refunds. Authorities have urged travelers to confirm flight statuses directly with airlines before heading to the airport.
The bad weather, attributed to a developing cyclonic system in the Bay of Bengal, has also led to heavy rainfall and strong winds in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. Emergency measures have been implemented in affected regions to ensure public safety.
