Belagavi: The Congress party has announced a series of events to mark the centenary of the historic 1924 Belagavi Congress session, the only session presided over by Mahatma Gandhi. A Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting will be held on December 26, followed by a public meeting on December 27, as part of the commemorative activities.

The Karnataka government has unveiled a year-long celebration under the theme ‘Gandhi Bharata’ to honor this milestone. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, in a meeting held in Bengaluru on Monday, outlined key initiatives for the celebrations.

Major Highlights:

Belagavi City Illumination: The city will be adorned with lights across 32 km of major roads and 30 prominent circles, replicating the grandeur of Mysuru Dasara.

Veer Soudha Development: The historic venue of the Congress session will see enhancements, including a new library, a Gandhi statue, and other infrastructural upgrades.

Congress Road Beautification: The 2.1 km stretch will feature a temporary Virupaksha Gopura, sculptures along the railway wall, and other visual attractions.

Statues and Memorials: A statue of social reformer Gangadhar Rao Deshpande will be installed at Kanabargi. A museum and photo gallery will be established at Hudali’s Gandhi Memorial. Additionally, memorial pillars will be erected at 120 locations across Karnataka that were visited by Mahatma Gandhi.

The public meetings and the infrastructure projects aim to reflect on Mahatma Gandhi’s contributions and the enduring legacy of the Belagavi session in India’s freedom struggle.
