5 Seriously Injured as House Explodes

Hyderabad:Six persons of a family including two kids suffered burns after there was a massive explosion at a house in Mahamudnagar, under Bahadurpura police station limits, on Wednesday evening. The incident occurred at 6.15 pm when the victims were preparing Diwali firecrackers at their house. Five persons — Shakeera Begum, her husband Mohammed Hafeez Khan, daughter-in-law Samia Begum and Samia’s two children — suffered burn injuries and are being treated in Osmania General Hospital’s burns ward, police said.

Samia’s husband and house owner Mohammed Waseem Khan, 33, are in the business of preparing firecrackers and store a huge quantity of sulphur, phosphorus and gunpowder in his house. He was out when the explosion occurred due to friction in the stored material, G. Sandeep Reddy, sub-inspector of Bahadurpura police station said.

The injured are undergoing treatment in the burns ward. We are recording their statements to investigate the incident further, said Sandeep. The house owner Waseem has reportedly been taken into custody for questioning. A case under the sections of the Explosives Act of 1884, has been booked and police are investigating.
