Misleading Ads Top Cases Handled by Telangana Drug Control Officials

HYDERABAD: The maximum number of cases that the Drug Control Administration (DCA) officials had to deal with since January this year has been those involving with misleading advertisements. As per the data shared by DCA (DG) Dr Kamalasan Reddy, there were around 176 seizures from various points in the state involving misleading advertisements. Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, 1954, prohibits advertisement of certain drugs for treatment of certain diseases and disorders.

This was followed by 124 cases involving quacks or unlicensed practitioners with unlicensed stocking and sale of drugs. About 75 seizures were made for price violations, 61 seizures from unlicensed medical shops and godowns. About 41 cases of medicines manufactured and sold as food products or nutraceuticals were caught by DCA.

One of the significant cases were when the officials carried out a joint operation along with Prohibition & Excise Department on the basis of an alert from Interpol and successfully busted illegal manufacturing of the Psychotropic Substance ‘3-Methylmethcathinone (3-MMC)’ at PSN Medicare Private Ltd. in IDA Bollaram, Sangareddy. ‘3-Methylmethcathinone’ which is also known as ‘3-MMC’ or ‘metaphedrone’ is a drug of abuse which is circulating in the market and is used recreationally by drug addicts.

During the joint operation, officials seized 90.48 kg of stock worth Rs 8.99 crore.
