Hyderabad: The Union department of biotechnology (DBT) and the Biotechnology Research and Innovation Council (BRIC) have announced the ‘One Day One Genome’ initiative to explore the microbial diversity of India. The programme was launched by Amitabh Kant, G-20 Sherpa and former Niti Aayog CEO, during the first foundation day celebrations of BRIC at the National Institute of Immunology (NII) in New Delhi.

The initiative will focus on sequencing bacterial genomes to understand their crucial roles in various sectors, including human health, agriculture, and environmental sustainability. Spearheaded by BRIC in collaboration with the National Institute of Biomedical Genomics (NIBMG), the project will release annotated bacterial genomes to the public. Each genome will include graphical summaries, infographics, and assembly details to promote research and innovation.

The data generated through this programme is expected to reveal microbial capabilities, such as antimicrobial resistance and bioactive compound production, paving the way for advancements in medicine, agriculture, and environmental protection.

The initiative aims to bridge gaps in microbial research and unlock its potential for sustainable development across various domains.
