Operation narcos helps RPF recover 1084.49 kgs narcotics worth Rs.2.70 cr
Hyderabad: The Railway Protection Force (RPF) of Secunderabad division has made a significant achievement in its ongoing efforts to combat the transportation of narcotics via railways.
It has been in the forefront of detecting and apprehending narcotic cases, particularly since being empowered under the NDPS Act in April 2019. In a focused effort to address the growing menace of illegal transportation of narcotics, the RPF launched operation – Narcos.
Under this operation, the RPF has intensified its surveillance and inspections on trains and identified hotspots nationwide, in collaboration with the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) and other law enforcement agencies. These efforts aim to dismantle the networks of drug peddlers utilizing the railways for their illicit trade.
On Sunday, as part of a special drive, all-women RPF Shakti team searched Konark Express and apprehended a suspect carrying two backpacks and four luggage bags containing 30 packets of dry marijuana, weighing a total of 56 kgs and valued at Rs 14 lakh.
The accused, along with the confiscated marijuana, was handed over to the Government Railway Police (GRP) at Vikarabad for further legal action. In the year 2023, the RPF Secunderabad Division had recovered narcotic products weighing 2889.41 kgs in 127 incidents valued Rs.22.20 crore and arrested 128 persons who were carrying NDPS and handed them over to the law enforcement agencies concerned for further legal action.
In 2024 till date, the RPF Secunderabad Division had recovered 1084.49 kgs narcotics products in 37 incidents valued Rs.2.70 crore and arrested 36 persons who were carrying NDPS with an increase of 770 per cent in seizure quantity compared to the corresponding month of previous year and handed them over to law enforcement agencies for further legal action.
Debashmita Chattopadhyay Banerjee, Senior Divisional Security Commissioner of Secunderabad, appreciated the diligent efforts of the RPF team, stating, “Narcotics not only destroy the health of our youth but also undermine the economy and the well-being of the nation.
“Drug addiction has far-reaching implications, affecting both the physical and mental health of individuals. We intensified checking on trains in coordination with the NCB and other enforcement agencies to target those involved in this illegal trade. We urge railway passengers to report any suspicious activity to the Railway Helpline at 139 for prompt action,” the officer said.
