Hyderabad: Hundreds of part-time lecturers from state universities have intensified their agitation demanding regularisation as contract assistant professors after years of service under challenging conditions. The lecturers, who work with workloads similar to their permanent counterparts, have been staging protests and submitting representations to government officials, urging for long-overdue recognition and job security.

The Telangana All Universities Part-time Teachers’ Association recently submitted a representation to the government, highlighting their plight. "We have been working with 13 to 15 hours of workload per week, a load that is on par with that of full-time assistant professors. Despite this, about 3,000 continue to remain in contractual positions with no job security," the association.

The association said that before 2014, converting part-time lecturers to contract assistant professors was a routine procedure, but a government directive halted this process.

Association president Dr Kandula Govindu urged the government to act swiftly. “This is not just about job security; it is about recognising the contributions of dedicated educators," said association vice-president Dr S.V. Ratnam.
