Hyderabad: The Prohibition and Excise department here on Monday busted yet another unique modus operandi of ganja peddlers with the arrest of a woman from Nanakramguda on charges of selling the substance by neatly packing it in 100 grams of turmeric sachet.

The excise officials were surprised when they were conducting a surprise check in Nanakramguda. A team was randomly checking the area and went to a grocery store where they casually pressed the turmeric powder sachet.

“Usually, any turmeric sachet would be soft. But when the excise team officials checked, they found something suspicious and opened it only to find dry ganja,” an official said. The team immediately detained the store owner Neha Bhai, 25.

Around 10 sachets of ganja sold in the name of ‘Atlas’ turmeric powder with standard grade was seized from her house. On coming to know about the arrest of Neha Bhai, her family members escaped from the area.

The excise officials said the family was allegedly bringing the contraband from the agency areas in Andhra Odisha Border (AoB) and selling it by adopting different modus operandi. An official said Neha Bhai was selling the sachet containing over 10 grams of ganja for Rs.600.

While simultaneously doing grocery store business, she was indulging in the sale of ganja with a code word -‘ Maal.’

When contacted, the Prohibition and Excise department Director VB Kamalasan Reddy told Deccan Chronicle that more details would emerge during the investigation. The department is cracking the whip on those indulging in sale of ganja in the city and warned that stern action would be taken against the peddlers if they failed to mend their ways.
