Gut health: The gateway to holistic wellbeing

Nageshwar Reddy, Chairman of Asian Institute of Gastroenterology and AIG Hospitals

Dr Nageshwar Reddy shares his approach to gut health through a plant-based diet, exercise, and mindful living.

As a gastroenterologist, Dr D. Nageshwar Reddy firmly believes that maintaining a healthy gut is crucial for overall well-being. “I base my approach to gut health on a balanced lifestyle, a diverse diet, and regular physical activity.”

The renowned gastroenterologist advocates for a diet that is primarily plant-based, which is excellent for maintaining a diverse and healthy microbiome. “My meals typically include a variety of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, and nuts. Because I am a South Indian, I follow a native diet, rich in traditional foods. Staples like millets and lentils, along with a variety of fermented foods like yoghurt and idli, contribute to the natural balance of these foods and promote gut health,” he says. Staying well-hydrated is another key aspect of his routine. “I make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day to aid digestion and overall bodily functions.”

FITNESS REGIME

Despite his busy schedule, Dr D. Nageshwar Reddy makes it a point to dedicate at least 45 minutes each day to physical activities. “This includes a brisk walk on the treadmill and some strength training exercises; apart from this, I usually prefer taking the stairs instead of the elevator. Regular physical activity not only keeps me fit but also supports a healthy digestive system.”

He also believes in the importance of mental health. Practices like mindfulness, meditation, and ensuring quality sleep are integral to my routine. “By adhering to these principles, I not only maintain my gut health, but also ensure that I stay fit and energised to meet the demands of my profession. A balanced diet, regular physical activity, and mindful living are the cornerstones of my health regimen.”
