Visakhapatnam: A 22-year-old teacher died by suicide following alleged prolonged harassment by her former lover in Bheemili mandal of Visakhapatnam district.

According to local police officials, the victim, identified as Kagitala Rasi, was a vidya volunteer at a ZP High School in Majjivalasa village of Bheemili mandal. She took the extreme step on November 16 and died while undergoing treatment at a hospital later that evening.

Police arrested Pilli Raju, 26, a resident of the same village, in connection with the incident. According to Bhimili sub-inspector, Raju and Rasi had been in a relationship for approximately 11 years. The situation reportedly deteriorated when Rasi’s parents opposed their marriage. “The accused threatened that he would take his own life if she didn’t marry him,” the Bhimili SI told Deccan Chronicle.

Raju was arrested on November 22 and is currently in judicial custody. Sources indicate that Raju had been pursuing and allegedly harassing her for several years under the pretext of love. The family, who had initially kept the matter private, later filed a formal complaint with the Bheemili police station.
