Hyderabad: The Telangana Raj Bhavan announced the launch of the 'Governor's Awards for Excellence' to honor individuals and organizations for outstanding contributions in environmental protection, welfare of Divyangjan, sports, and culture. Each field will have two award categories: individuals and organizations (societies/trusts). The awards, carrying Rs 2 lakh and a citation each, will be presented annually during the Governor’s Republic Day 'At Home' event, attended by the Chief Minister, ministers, and other dignitaries, Principal Secretary B. Venkatesham said.

This initiative, spearheaded by Governor Jishnu Dev Varma, is reportedly the first of its kind by a Raj Bhavan in India. An eminent jury, chaired by former Union home secretary K. Padmanabhaiah, will decide the winners. “It is an attempt by the Governor to recognise exemplary services rendered by people,” Venkatesham explained, adding that the awards aim to acknowledge significant contributions during a major event like 'At Home.'

Eligible applicants include Telangana residents and organizations active in the four categories since 2019. Applications can be submitted both online and offline, and nominations on behalf of notable but unwilling contributors are also allowed. If necessary, the jury may select awardees from other sources if insufficient or inadequate applications are received.
